There used to be a time when people would ask me what i do for a living. I would say I am a “Professional Gambler”. There would be alot of similar reactions to this and most would involve confused looks, a head tilt and normally the end of the conversation!
These days I have learnt to simply say I am a self employed day trader. Most people dont know what that is exactly but it sure sounds like something legitimate that can make some good money so its acceptable.
I believe that if you tell people your a professional gambler they simply wont believe its possible to make a living from gambling. This is because gambling is often associated with seedy bookie shops and stories of the guy who lost his family’s life savings through gambling addictions. Well that can happen, but my view is that we are all gambling in some way or another in life even if we dont realise it!
Alot of people dont think gambling can be a very stable income. I overheard some so-called friends talking about me a few years ago saying “I would probably lose it all soon enough”. I had to laugh as it implied I was going “all-in” on my bets everytime like some madman. Its true that people dont realise the amount of hard work and discipline it takes to go professional in this field.
For example, those who work as traders in the city are constantly gambling on the price of their shares rising or falling in their favour. If you start your own business, you buy some stock, pay for cost of advertising and you are gambling that you can make that money back and some profit on top of it. So we are all gambling in some way or another, the important thing is that when you gamble you gamble with the odds in your favour!
If i launched a new business i would do research on my area, and draw up a business plan. Well betting on football isnt too much different. I spend a vast amout of time researching certain matches. I look at past results, team news, motivations, suspensions, the referee and even the weather forecast! I then decide which bet is the best one to take based on my research and based on the football betting systems that I use.
As you can see it’s all very similar to deciding to launch my own company, main difference is that I wont have to wait years to make decent profit as i normally get paid as soon the match ends!
So it is absolutely possible to be a professional gambler, reason being that we ALL are professional gamblers in some way or form!
